The School of Architecture and Planning encompasses the Department of Architecture, the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, the Media Lab, the Center for Real Estate, and the Program in Art, Culture and Technology.

MIT has always been on the cutting edge of architectural design. The Institute boasts the nation's first architecture department and second city planning program. The one-year graduate program at the Center for Real Estate is the first of its kind in the country. The Media Lab, opened in 1985, is world-renowned for its creative interdisciplinary focus.
