Piano Drop

The Piano Drop is an event hosted by Baker House to recognize the spring semester drop date. A piano is launched off Baker's roofdeck to plummet six stories to the unforgiving ground below. The event usually takes place in late April, as MIT's drop date is notoriously late in the semester.

The event's organizers try to find non-functional pianos to destroy. To ensure that the spectacle is suitably impressive for the audience, the pianos are often aimed at other objects situated on the ground below the roofdeck to create an additional explosion.

Spectators are asked to maintain a safe distance from the drop area until after the piano has been destroyed. Once the demolition is complete, onlookers often gather to collect remains of the piano as souvenirs.
